Written by: Ken Vollmer with Alex Cullen and Matt Czarnecki, Forrester

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals recently completed a major upgrade to its business-to-business (B2B) capability that supports a global rollout of a single-instance SAP implementation. The upgrade resulted in a more agile B2B operation, labor savings in excess of 60% per year, and reduced software licensing costs in the range of 20% per year. Enterprise architects should use Wyeth’s experience as an example of the types of savings that B2B modernization efforts can provide.

Barber Foods

For frozen chicken products purveyor Barber Foods, migrating to SAP R/3 put several related projects on the IT team’s plate. For one thing, the company’s legacy AS/400-based EDI system needed to be replaced with an SAP-friendly Windows platform. For another, several core enterprise applications had to be integrated with SAP on an aggressive schedule. SEEBURGER’s Business Integration Server (BIS) dished up a single solution that met both needs and has gradually taken over additional functions ranging from transmitting customer invoices to facilitating electronic funds transfers. More than 13,000 transactions now flow through the BIS gateway every day, eliminating custom integration work and helping keep supermarket freezers stocked with staples like Barber Foods Chicken Kiev, All-American Fingers and Stuffed Chicken Nuggets.

Beijing Benz-DaimlerChrysler Automotive Corporation, Ltd.

In 2006, BeijingBenz-DaimlerChrysler Automotive Ltd. (BBDC) opened an all-new state-of-the-art factory in Beijing to build Mercedes Benz E- and C-Class sedans as well as Chrysler’s best-selling big-grilled 300C sport/luxurymobile. Today we have a system in which we are able provide traditional-EDI to those customers who have it and extend it to process sales orders for those who don't. Ultimately SEEBURGER allows us to provide our customers with the best possible service while reducing our overall cost and leverage against our investment. SEEBURGER's commitment to BSH was extremely important to the success of our EDI implementation. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA)

"EDI is imperative for our just-in-time operations as well as for just-in-sequence backup in case one of our live data feeds goes down, but we don’t dictate which software the supplier has to use. It’s entirely their decision,” said J.T. Hu, Application Development Manager, Hyundai Information Service North America. “On the other hand, we knew we couldn’t expect our South Korean suppliers to invest in a conventional EDI system out of the gate considering they were entering the U.S. market with only one customer: us. SEEBURGER’s Hub&Spoke model provided a practical and innovative alternative.”

Vattenfall

At Vattenfall, about 3,500 invoices come in daily per fax and per post. As the manual data entry of that amount of data has been extremely time-consuming and expensive, the organisation decided to acquire a solution to directly integrate invoice data into its ERP system, and to realise process automation of validation and release. Moreover, a solution based on supplier-specific invoice templates was not possible due to the fact that Vattenfall has approx. 88,000 suppliers.
